Il Wat Rong Khun, detto anche White temple o Tempio bianco, si trova a pochi chilometri a sud della città di Chiang Rai all'estremo nord della Thailandia.
E' un tempio contemporaneo sia buddista che induista ed è assolutamente non convenzionale.
L'ideatore è anche il proprietario, un famoso e ricco architetto tailandese, Chalemchai Kositpipat. Il tempio è stato aperto al pubblico nel 1997 ed è in continuo lavoro di rifinitura. Se ne prevede il termine ad una data simbolica, il 2070.
Kositpipat considera l'opera come un'offerta al Buddha e crede che il progetto gli dia l'immortalità dell'anima.
Quando sarà completato comprenderà otto edifici e un monastero.
Il materiale più utilizzato è il gesso decorato con migliaia di pezzetti di vetro.
Purtroppo il 5 maggio scorso (2014) c'è stato un terremoto non particolarmente violento ma sufficiente per danneggiare gravemente la struttura principale ora non più visitabile.
L'edificio principale è comunque raggiungibile attraversando un ponte su di un piccolo lago e rappresenta "il ciclo della rinascita". Di fronte al ponticello centinaia di mani tese emergono dall'acqua, rappresentano i desideri sfrenati e indicano la strada per la felicità rinunciando alle tentazioni.
Accanto al ponte si possono ammirare due eleganti "Kinnaree" creature della mitologia buddista metà umane e metà uccello.
Per entrare nell'area non si paga il biglietto, sono bene accette offerte ma non oltre le 10.000THB, questo perché l'artista non vuole essere influenzato dai donatori.
